This episode is the first of a two-part installment where Scott and Jon talk with Jennifer Knapp. Jennifer was once a musician and artist in the Christian Contemporary Music (CCM) industry where she achieved great success including a Grammy nomination and numerous Dove awards. However, in 2004, after years in the limelight of the stage and the gaze of the public eye, Jennifer decided to take a hiatus from the music and embark on a personal journey of renewal and self-discovery. Several years later, Jennifer announced her return to music and also that she was gay (as seen on Larry King Live on CNN). This time though, Jennifer decided to go mainstream with her music, her orientation, and her faith. In this episode, Scott, Jon, and Jennifer discuss her journey and much more, including her new album, Love Comes Back Around.

This week, Scott and Jon talk with Peter Rollins. Peter is a writer, philosopher, storyteller and public speaker who has gained an international reputation for overturning traditional notions of religion and forming “churches” that preach the Good News that we can’t be satisfied, that life is difficult, and that we don’t know the secret. Scott, Jon, and Peter dive right into these ideas in this episode as they discuss how Christianity is actually absurd (which is good news!) and how Christianity is similar to punk rock. They also discuss other various topics like: doubt, certainty, uncertainty, the end of meaning, and how all of it is really good news! Seriously, it is really good news. Enjoy!

This week, Scott and Jon talk with Dr. AJ Levine, who is the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Department of Religious Studies, and Graduate Department of Religion. AJ is widely known for Feminist theology. A noted and acclaimed author, AJ has also been featured on various media outlets (including CNN) where she lends her expertise to biblical topics.

In this episode, Scott, Jon, and AJ discuss several topics including:

- How does misunderstanding Jesus' jewish culture make for a weak reading of the Bible?

- What is the biblical idea of salvation?

- What does the Bible really have to say about topics like Hell and the Book of Revelation?

- How do we miss the point when reading the parables of Jesus?

All of this and so much more!

Rob Bell visits the show to talk about his new book "What Is The Bible?" And by the way, this book has the most epic subtitle ever: "How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything." That is quite a claim and Rob is here to chat about the truth of that statement with Scott and Jon. In this episode, Rob, Scott and Jon discuss questions like...

- How do Americans misread the Bible?

- Why do we need to begin with the human factor when reading the Bible?

- Are doctrines like inerrancy and infallibility valid?

Scott, Jon, and Rob discuss all of this and so much more! If you enjoy this interview, please be sure to rate, review and subscribe to this podcast in iTunes.

Mike Morrell, co-author of "The Divine Dance" with Richard Rohr, chats with Scott and Jon this week to discuss his book and an often misunderstood idea: God as Trinity. Mike shares a bit of his diverse church background and how it all led him to the search for something more and ultimately writing this book with Richard Rohr. In part one, Mike discusses how the evangelical view of God is still largely pagan and the real-life implications for having such a view of God that's single instead of Trinity.

In this episode, Scott and Jon respond to tough questions from listeners. Questions include:

- Can salvation be lost?

- What is the Christ Consciousness?

- What do we do with the Bible if we accept that it is not inerrant?

With their usual humor and insight, Scott and Jon seek not to objectively answer the questions but to simply give their own subjective responses with the hope of helping those who listen to continue to navigate their spiritual journey.

Science Mike McHargue sits down with Scott and Jon to talk life after evangelicalism. In this conversational episode, Mike shares about his experience once he departed from the evangelical church and what his relationships looked like in the aftermath. Mike discusses how to set healthy boundaries in relationships with people who seem to have an agenda to bring you back to the evangelical church, or even just want to tell you that you are wrong and hell-bound. This conversation with Science Mike is full of wisdom and hope for those who have left the evangelical church, or even those who are considering leaving. And for fun, Scott, Jon, and Mike talk a little bit about how to approach the Bible near the end of the conversation.

This episode, Scott and Jon talk with Jay Bakker. Jay is the pastor of Revolution Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which Jay calls unorganized religion. Jay's movement toward nontraditional ministry was born out of brokenness and woundedness. Jay is the son of Jim Bakker and the late Tammy Faye Bakker Messner who were popular televangelists in the 1980's and built the evangelical empire known as PTL. That empire ultimately crumbled amidst scandal while Jay was just a young boy. This experience led him to become a radically inclusive minster of reconciliation and the love of God for all people. However, wounds run deep and in this episode, Jay talks about his battle with depression and his journey through the dark night of the soul.

Tithing is often preached in the Evangelical Church as a mandate for Christians, but is that the truth? Although Scott and Jon are both ordained ministers, neither are employed by the American Church. So, buckle up, because they are going to talk about tithing in a way that you will most likely never hear preached on a Sunday morning. In this episode, Scott and Jon discuss a lot of questions that many people have about tithing and, most importantly, whether or not it is actually a mandate for Christians today. Spoiler Alert: Episode contains much sarcasm, honesty, heresy and even some tears.

This episode is the final installment of Scott and Jon's talk with the Pastor of the Resistance Movement, John Pavlovitz. The American Evangelical Church is dying. Many who are disenfranchised with the American Evangelical Church seem to be joining together to give birth to a new Church that represents more of the inclusive, love-filled Jesus message. There is also a lot of hostility right now largely due to the Evangelical Church's support of Trump. John shares his wisdom on these issues and how those who denounce Trump can still have love for all people while resisting and forging a new path. Mar 14, 2017

In this much anticipated episode, Scott and Jon talk with the Pastor of the Resistance Movement, John Pavlovitz. In part one of this series, John Pavlovitz tells his story of once being employed as an evangelical pastor, but was terminated from that position because he "did not fit." Although painful and disorienting at the time, John's termination paved the way for him to speak passionately and unapologetically about numerous issues including: politics, LGBTQ equality, toxic evangelicalism, and the Jesus message. John Pavlovitz and the Holy Heretics not only discuss all of these topics, but also how the White Evangelical-American Church could overwhelmingly elect a President that seems to be the antithesis of all things Christ-like. It seems as though the American Church is dying and possibly on the brink of a rebirth; becoming a Church that is more representative of the inclusive, love-filled Jesus message. John Pavlovitz and the Holy Heretics discuss all of this and more. Read below to discover how to connect with and support John Pavlovitz and also how to pre-order his new book, A Bigger Table.

Mar 7, 2017

For many years, American Evangelicalism has proposed the idea that there's an individual plan from God for each one of us. The American Evangelical Church has preached this message with great certainty. But what about the sufferings of life? Is that God's plan? What's the context of the often quoted passage of Jeremiah 29:11? Has this passage largely been misunderstood and misinterpreted? Is there a better way to understand the wisdom of the text and give us a new framework for understanding a Divine plan? Scott and Jon discuss all this and more.

In this episode, Scott and Jon tackle the topic of Church Hurt. Many have been hurt in the context of church. Some have healed and moved on, but others are still wrestling with the emotional fallout. Scott and Jon discuss how the idea of certainty within church culture actually creates a false environment of safety, which makes church hurt wounds run deeper than most. Church hurt can either make you bitter or better, and Scott and Jon discuss the path of healing for these wounds. If you've been hurt by the Church, this episode is for you.

This episode is part 2 of the interview with Bishop Carlton Pearson and Rev D.E. Paulk. Topics on the table include theology, toxic evangelicalism, inclusion, oneness, Carlton's movie and even a bit about Trump. Enjoy!

Carlton was mentored by world-renowned tele-evangelist, the late Oral Roberts. Carlton was a mega-church pastor in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but lost it all when he began to preach that there is no literal eternal-torture chamber called hell and beyond that, began preaching about the inclusive love of God. These personal beliefs that Carlton spoke of publicly set in a motion a chain of events that ultimately led to him being excommunicated by his denomination and officially branded a heretic. Carlton has since been an advocate and agent for peace and inclusion as he has spoken on numerous media outlets including: NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, BET, etc. Carlton has authored numerous books (see below) and a movie about his story is currently in production entitled "Come Sunday." The lead role of Carlton is played by Chiwetel Ejiofor who was the lead actor in the movie "12 Years A Slave".

Rev. D.E. Paulk is also a leading voice in the inclusive spiritual movement and is a fifth generation minister. Through life experiences and personal growth, D.E. also came to understand that the love of God is inclusive and not exclusive. D.E.'s passionate message centers around the Oneness of all things. D.E. pastors Spirit and Truth Sanctuary in Atlanta, Georgia where he leads the trendiest, friendliest, most radically inclusive church in Atlanta. People from all religions are both welcome and celebrated.

Episode 5 is the conclusion of Jon's story and the conclusion of our Breaking Church series. In this episode, Jon discusses pastoring in the evangelical church setting, and how he almost hit it big in the contemporary christian music scene with the group, Newsong. Jon also tells of his departure from pastoring in the evangelical church setting and how he came to understand that God's love is much more inclusive than he ever thought.

Episode 4 features one of the Holy Heretics, Jon, telling his story of growing up in the Evangelical Church and the South. Entrenched in a deeply conservative religious family who performed regularly in the Southern Gospel Music scene, Jon was no stranger to the spotlight of Evangelicalism. With raw honesty, humor, and candor, Jon and Scott discuss how Jon's family conflicts and personal faith journey ultimately took Jon on a different spiritual path.

The Holy Heretics drop a special episode to discuss the inauguration of Trump. In this raw and unedited special episode, Scott and Jon compare and contrast the Jesus message with the Evangelical Church as it relates to Trump. They also discuss how the Evangelical Church helped Trump win the Presidency even though he campaigned on a platform of exclusion, bigotry, racism, and fear (among other things) which clearly runs counter to the Jesus message. Even still, Jon and Scott believe that there's hope for the future and that hope is found in the Divinity that lies within us all.

Episode 2 is the final installment of Scott's story. Scott discusses his six years working in the Evangelical Church setting and how his thinking began to change through his lived experience. Eventually, Scott came to a place of such holy discontent that he left paid, professional pastoring for the unknown, mystery-filled walk of faith.

Episode 1 features one of the Holy Heretics, Scott, telling his story of growing up in the South and the Evangelical Church. With humor, honesty, and a bit of sarcasm, Scott reflects on the evangelical values that were instilled in him at a very young age. Scott also discusses how growing up in such a Jesus-charged environment set the stage for an inner desire (or "calling") to be in evangelical pastoral ministry, which he later left.

We are two guys who pastored in the Evangelical Church and then departed. In the Deep South nonetheless! We love the Jesus story, but our experiences (reconciled with our theology and tradition) have put us on a new path. We actually think the Christ is bigger than just one religion. We believe that many, especially those within Western Evangelical Christianity, are also forging a new path and a new way of seeing as well. Come join us on this journey! You are not alone!
