The Holy Heretics podcast welcomes Christopher Maloney to talk about his film In God We Trump.

In the most surprising election results of modern times, Donald J. Trump defied expectations to become the 45th president of the United States. Though written off by almost every major news outlet and poll, Trump pulled through to victory in part because of the unwavering support of his staunchest supporters – Evangelical Christians.

Despite lewd comments, a checkered past, and two failed marriages, Trump became the choice of most Evangelical voters, winning 80% of the Christian vote. Why? Many in the Christian community were asking, “How can Christians vote for Donald Trump?” while others were asking, “How can Christians not vote for Donald Trump?”

Now, largely because of the election and the endorsement of several high-profile Christian leaders, there exists a clear divide in the faith community. It was recently reported that 14% of Christian churchgoers have since left the Church because of something related to the 2016 Presidential Election. Why? What’s happening? Can these differences be reconciled within the Church?

That remains to be seen. In the meantime, this film explores these matters by inviting the voices of ministers, voters, Christian writers, and political activists to create something that tells the story of Trump’s relationship with the faith community.

Did Donald Trump become a Christian, as some claim, or did he orchestrate a major con by going through the motions in order to get votes?

We welcome the Dr Phil back and we talk about SEX! Don't want to miss this conversation!

http://phillipnikao.com/

Recognized as a Passionate Voice of Oneness, Reason, and Relevance, Dr. Nikao is blazing new trails in the vast world of business, success, psychology, and science-based spirituality.

In his raw and compelling style, he has evolved from the corporate desk to entrepreneur, from institutionalized religion to transformational practicality, from following the crowd to leading it.

Dr. Nikao believes that within every person is a spark of genius, creativity, and passion. His pursuit in life is laser focused on connecting people to that spark in consciousness and manifest reality. Along the way, he has discovered that the conventional systems of change and growth are often severely lacking, and mediocre at best. So Dr. Nikao has taken the road less traveled, often at great personal sacrifice, to help pave the high road of empowered living, impactful prosperity, and authentic success.

Growing up in an Amish home set the stage for Dr. Nikao’s life-journey, experiencing early in life the difficulty and pain of “breaking out”, yet the reward and joy of life transformation.

With Degrees in both religion and neuroscience, and his Doctorate in Psychology, Dr. Nikao continues to lead and study from a perspective of finding practical solutions to life’s complexity. His passion for life-transformation quickly led to public speaking early in life, which in turn brought Nikao face-to-face with the incredible need for personal life-coaching, a real and touchable process that brings practicality to information.

In 1999, Dr. Nikao developed and implemented a highly successful Life Coaching team, and yet again, built bridges between the mass audiences in his public speaking career with the personalization of life-coaching.

In his journey, he has spoken before thousands, even sharing the stage with leaders like Zig Ziglar, Rudolph Guliani, and Margaret Thatcher. He has traveled to other countries, spoken and lectured in high schools and colleges, and is a confidant to business and spiritual leaders across the country.

Paul Young joins us to chat about his life experience and gives us some insight for what inspired the writing of "The Shack" and his other great books.

http://wmpaulyoung.com/

“I thought the way I grew up was ‘normal’ but I think most would probably agree that my history and journey have been a bit unusual.”

We live in a world where ‘normal’ does not truly exist except as a concept or wishful thought. For each of us, where and how we grew up plays a foundational role in our sense of ‘normal’, and only when we begin to experience the ‘bigness and diversity’ of the world are we tempted to evaluate our roots.

I thought the way I grew up was ‘normal’ but most would probably agree that my history and journey have been a bit unusual. The eldest of four, born May 11th, 1955, in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, the majority of my first decade was lived with my missionary parents in the highlands of Netherlands New Guinea (West Papua), among the Dani, a technologically stone age tribal people. These became my family and as the first white child and outsider who ever spoke their language, I was granted unusual access into their culture and community. Although at times a fierce warring people, steeped in the worship of spirits and even occasionally practicing ritualistic cannibalism, they also provided a deep sense of identity that remains an indelible element of my character and person.

By the time I was flown away to boarding school at age 6, I was in most respects a white Dani. In the middle of a school year, my family unexpectedly returned to the West. My father worked as a Pastor for a number of small churches in Western Canada and by the time I graduated, I had already attended thirteen different schools. I paid my way through Bible College working as a radio disc jockey, lifeguard and even a stint in the oil fields of northern Alberta. I spent one summer in the Philippines and another touring with a drama troupe before working in Washington D.C. at Fellowship House, an international guesthouse. Completing my undergraduate degree in Religion, I graduated summa cum laude from Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon.

The following year, I met and married Kim Warren and for a time worked on staff at a large suburban church while attending seminary. I have owned businesses and worked for others in diverse industries, from insurance to construction, venture capital companies to telecom, contract work to food processing; whatever was needed to help feed and house our growing family. I have always been a writer, whether songs, poetry, short stories or newsletters; never for public consumption but for friends and family. While I have extensively written for business, creating web content, business plans, white papers etc., The Shack was a story written for my six children, with no thought or intention to publish. No one is more surprised that I am now considered an ‘author’. The truth is, I am a rather simple guy; I have one wife, six kids, two daughter-in-laws, a son-in-law and six grandkids, and incredible friends and extended family surround us. New friends, like you, are part of our expanding world and adventure.

These are some of the facts of my life, but they don’t begin to tell the real story. That would take much more room than is available here. The journey has been both incredible and unbearable, a desperate grasping after grace and wholeness. These facts don’t tell you about the pain of trying to adjust to different cultures, of life losses that were almost too staggering to bear, of walking down railroad tracks at night in the middle of winter screaming into the windstorm, of living with an underlying volume of shame so deep and loud that it constantly threatened any sense of sanity, of dreams not only destroyed but obliterated by personal failure, of hope so tenuous that only the trigger seemed to offer a solution. These few facts also do not speak to the potency of love and forgiveness, the arduous road of reconciliation, the surprises of grace and community, of transformational healing and the unexpected emergence of joy.

The data of history might help you understand where a person has been, but often hide who they actually are. The Shack and Cross Roads will tell you much more about me than a few facts ever could, but a writer is always more, intentionally illusive behind the curtain of words. For me as a human being, everything is about Jesus and Father and Holy Spirit, about relationships, and to live is to participate in an adventure of faith which can only be experienced inside one day’s worth of grace at a time. Aspirations of success, visions of significance and dreams of grandeur all died a long time ago and I have absolutely no interest in resurrecting them. I have finally figured out that I have nothing to lose by living a life of faith and trust. I know more joy every minute of every day than seems appropriate, but I love the wastefulness of my Papa’s grace and presence.

Once an AC/DC roadie, Taylor found God and became a star preacher at his LA church. Now he has been asked to leave – and many of his flock will go with him

The historic church of All Saints’, Beverly Hills, on a prime residential street near the luxury shopping hub of Rodeo Drive, is not a place you would expect to find a British former heavy metal roadie as associate rector. But that is the role Barry Taylor, once dubbed “the screaming skull” for his gaunt visage, has played for the past 10 years.

Not any more. The normally staid world of Californian Episcopalians has been turned upside down by a row over collection plates and preaching styles that led the Los Angeles branch of the church to hand the city’s most eccentric priest his cards. Urged on by his many celebrity supporters, Taylor has now set up a rival service at a temporary Sunday venue at a rented Lutheran church. The west coast religious establishment has never seen anything quite like it.

Taylor’s extraordinary journey from star roadie to priest began with his conversion to Christianity on the Highway to Hell tour, AC/DC’s aptly named sex-, booze- and drug-fuelled trip to the US in 1979. He enrolled in a seminary to become a priest, with a PhD in pop culture and theology.

“Let’s say that tour is where my epiphany began,” says Taylor, who would sit in the tour bus scribbling notes into a bible and reading philosophy while taking cocaine. He is speaking to the Observer at a cafe in Santa Monica, a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean on the other side of town, where Taylor now lives. It’s a long way from Cambridgeshire, where he grew up and went to grammar school before a friend introduced him to the 1970s music scene and he became a roadie to rock ’n’ roll celebrities, including the Bay City Rollers. Following his conversion, Taylor went to various churches, got married and divorced, and formed his own alternative place of worship in LA, which he named “Sanctuary”. Services featured Taylor on guitar with his band Wonderland and sermons that referenced the Danish Christian philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and Bob Dylan.

Can we resist without creating more hatred and division?

Of course we must resist racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, but can we do so without hate?

When we desecrate anothers divinity we desecrate our own. Let's  resist but resist peacefully.

Let's talk!

I have a great talk with our friend Steve Stone AKA Starbucks Pastor.

In 2016, Starbucks debuted an original content video series called Upstanders. Upstanders highlighted ordinary people doing extraordinary things to create positive change in their communities to inspire others to be better citizens. Steve Stone was a featured personality in one of these short story videos.

At that time, Steve pastored a United Methodist Church in Memphis, TN called Heartsong. As pastor, Steve challenged his congregation to follow the teachings of Jesus, but then... an Islamic Community Center purchased property across the street from the church and began building a facility. Steve faced a challenge on how to respond to this Muslim community because American Christianity generally calls such groups outsiders. Steve decided that the teachings of Jesus called him to embrace his new Muslim neighbors, not as evangelistic targets, but as equals. Steve encouraged his congregation to do the same.

Steve has since retired from pastoring but is now the Executive Director of the Friendship Foundation in Memphis. This non-profit organization spurred from the friendship birthed between Heartsong UMC and the Memphis Islamic Center and they have plans to build a $12M friendship park to promote greater peace and unity in their community
