We welcome Pete Enns to the show today to talk about the Bible!!

Here's what Pete says about himself.

I spent half my 20s and 30s in graduate school–first seminary then getting my PhD. I’ve been teaching, writing, and speaking about the Bible for over 20 years.

I like to ask questions and I don’t like quick, safe answers to make the hard questions go away.

I am an explorer. I’m wired to say, ”Yeah, but. . . .” I’ve gotten into trouble now and then for it.

And I love telling Bible stories.

Not the stories you might tell your children. In fact, not just stories that are in the Bible–although there’s that, too.

I tell stories about everyday normal people and their struggles with the Bible.

The Bible is supposed to be the book that tells us what God is up to, but once you start reading, you get more than you bargained for.

The Bible is ancient, weird, unfamiliar, from another world and another time. Some of it is bizarre, unbelievable, and even morally suspect.

The Bible that tells us about God is a messy book that just won’t behave itself.

I tell stories about this messy Bible and what it means to read it with both eyes open to its problems and challenges, and to its promises and possibilities.

I tell stories about the Bible to try to make sense of it.

Today we talk about his new "What the Bible Actually does."

Carlton Pearson (born 1953) is an American Christian minister.[1] At one time, he was the pastor of the Higher Dimensions Evangelistic Center Incorporated, later named it Higher Dimensions Family Church which was one of the largest churches in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During the 1990s, it grew to an average attendance of over 6,000. Due to his stated belief in universal reconciliation, Pearson rapidly began to lose his influence in ministry with the Joint College of African-American Pentecostal Bishops[2] and was eventually declared a heretic by his peers in 2004.

Pearson has subsequently been the Senior Minister of Christ Universal Temple, a large New Thought congregation in Chicago, Illinois; head of a new Higher Dimensions fellowship in Chicago; and an affiliate minister at Tulsa's All Souls Unitarian Church.

Come Sunday

In July 2010 it was announced that director Marc Forster would direct a feature film about Pearson's life, from a script by Marcus Hinchey based on This American Life's "Heretics" episode.[19] In January 2017, Joshua Marston was reported to be directing the project as a film for Netflix, with Chiwetel Ejiofor cast to play Pearson, Condola Rashad as his wife Gina, and Martin Sheen as Oral Roberts.[20] The film, entitled Come Sunday, premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival[21] and was released on Netflix on April 13, 2018.[22]

And today he has started a new movement called "COME MONDAY" and can be connected with through his live stream each Monday night.

We welcome Dr Bussie to our show to talk about what limitless LOVE means to her.

Dr. Jacqueline Bussie is an award-winning author, professor, theologian, public speaker, and student of life in all its messy beauty. Her books include Love Without Limits (2018) and Outlaw Christian (2016), which won the 2017 Gold Medal Illumination Award for Christian Living. Jacqueline teaches religion, theology, and interfaith studies classes at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where she also serves as the Director of the Forum on Faith and Life. Every day she is amazed and grateful that she actually gets paid to do the three things she loves most: 1) interact with incredible students, 2) write, and 3) try to make the world a more compassionate place.
.
In her free time, Jacqueline loves to: read books, ride in the front car of roller coasters, take ballroom dance classes with her husband, and travel to any place she has never been before. She is a huge fan of long walks, laughter, the band Bon Iver, the smell of honeysuckle on a hot day, and her husband’s fantastic fajitas. Her favorite place to write is next to any body of water. Though Jacqueline hails from Florida, she now lives in Fargo, North Dakota–which is all the proof she needs that the Divine has a sense of humor.

The Holy Heretics podcast welcomes Christopher Maloney to talk about his film In God We Trump.

In the most surprising election results of modern times, Donald J. Trump defied expectations to become the 45th president of the United States. Though written off by almost every major news outlet and poll, Trump pulled through to victory in part because of the unwavering support of his staunchest supporters – Evangelical Christians.

Despite lewd comments, a checkered past, and two failed marriages, Trump became the choice of most Evangelical voters, winning 80% of the Christian vote. Why? Many in the Christian community were asking, “How can Christians vote for Donald Trump?” while others were asking, “How can Christians not vote for Donald Trump?”

Now, largely because of the election and the endorsement of several high-profile Christian leaders, there exists a clear divide in the faith community. It was recently reported that 14% of Christian churchgoers have since left the Church because of something related to the 2016 Presidential Election. Why? What’s happening? Can these differences be reconciled within the Church?

That remains to be seen. In the meantime, this film explores these matters by inviting the voices of ministers, voters, Christian writers, and political activists to create something that tells the story of Trump’s relationship with the faith community.

Did Donald Trump become a Christian, as some claim, or did he orchestrate a major con by going through the motions in order to get votes?

We welcome the funny, intense, loving Jami Amerine to our show.

Jami says -

I was forcibly pushed into blogging, and I LOVE IT!  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!  I have met and interacted with people all over the world! I have never had so much fun. The psychobabble that I share on this blog is probably not the wisest on the internet, but if it resonates with a few, hey, that’ll do! I am a wife to Justin, and mother to Maggie, John, Luke, Sophie, Sam, and Charlie.  We are on a reprieve from foster care as we recover from the removal of a long-term placement.

My husband Justin and I have a ranch near our home and we love to travel and “just be.”  However, we recently relocated to the North Houston. I have a Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, and Human Development, but don’t let that fool you, I am not sure how I pulled that off. I also have an undergraduate degree in Family and Consumer Sciences (yeah, Home Ec.). I can cook anything, but don’t ask me to sew.So since this journey began I have been featured on numerous occasions on foreverymom.com and several other syndications sites including scarymommy.com and mamalode.com,

You can also find me on Fox News, Today Parenting, and Huffington!

Basically, you only have to read a couple of my blog posts to get the gist. It is pretty cut and dry. I love my husband and my kids, I am afraid of flying, my Xanax is on automatic refill, I am addicted to Jesus, Facebook, blogging, and babies. I love to travel and hang at my parents’ lake house outside of Houston, Texas. My dad is my #1 fan. My husband and sons don’t read my blog because they are dyslexic and are waiting for it to come out on audio.  I have run the gamut in trying to raise perfect humans and I am proud to say… I failed. They are imperfectly wonderful!  I am a Christian who tends to get snarky. I am anti-Jesus fish because I am a lousy driver, so I don’t think He wants me to advertise on my 12 passenger van for Him. And I have decided my political affiliation is Conservative, Liberal, Socialist.  I have my own ticket.

Such a fun talk!

We welcome the real Dr Phil back to the Holy Heretics podcast to talk about not just crossing the bridge but helping to build the new world.

www.phillipnikao.com

Recognized as a Passionate Voice of Oneness, Reason, and Relevance, Dr. Nikao is blazing new trails in the vast world of business, success, psychology, and science-based spirituality.

In his raw and compelling style, he has evolved from the corporate desk to entrepreneur, from institutionalized religion to transformational practicality, from following the crowd to leading it.

Dr. Nikao believes that within every person is a spark of genius, creativity, and passion. His pursuit in life is laser focused on connecting people to that spark in consciousness and manifest reality. Along the way, he has discovered that the conventional systems of change and growth are often severely lacking, and mediocre at best. So Dr. Nikao has taken the road less traveled, often at great personal sacrifice, to help pave the high road of empowered living, impactful prosperity, and authentic success.

Growing up in an Amish home set the stage for Dr. Nikao’s life-journey, experiencing early in life the difficulty and pain of “breaking out”, yet the reward and joy of life transformation.

With Degrees in both religion and neuroscience, and his Doctorate in Psychology, Dr. Nikao continues to lead and study from a perspective of finding practical solutions to life’s complexity. His passion for life-transformation quickly led to public speaking early in life, which in turn brought Nikao face-to-face with the incredible need for personal life-coaching, a real and touchable process that brings practicality to information.

In 1999, Dr. Nikao developed and implemented a highly successful Life Coaching team, and yet again, built bridges between the mass audiences in his public speaking career with the personalization of life-coaching.

In his journey, he has spoken before thousands, even sharing the stage with leaders like Zig Ziglar, Rudolph Guliani, and Margaret Thatcher. He has traveled to other countries, spoken and lectured in high schools and colleges, and is a confidant to business and spiritual leaders across the country.
